Calling All Men!
Why don't men step up and be the spiritual leaders in the home? What does it even mean to be the "spiritual leader?"
In our Life Groups, we're going through this Love & Respect series. It's been a huge eye opener to me and my relationships with my wife and children. IT'S TRUE: good-willed men need unconditional respect and good-willed women need unconditional love like we both need air to breath. Back to the posed questions...
I definately understand, personally, why men don't step up to lead the family on a more consistant basis. Often times it's a lose lose situation for us. The women want us to lead... the "right" way... which is often their way. We're wrong when we do and we're wrong if we don't. The truth is we do things different, sometimes in a bad way and sometimes in a good way, but we're not given room to grow into the role we desire to have.
I believe there IS a desire in every man to lead their families by example. But, it's either never been modeled to us, it's been squashed, or it's failed so many times it gave up. But it's never too late! Respect fuels that desire to lead. Maybe if wives treated husbands with respect as the men they so desire to be, it would fuel their desire to lead as men of character. (Women, if you're wondering who he desires to be as the man of the house, maybe you should just ask him...when he's in a comfortable environment.) But, men... the biggest thing holding you back is YOU!
You can't do this with out other's help. I know you want to think that you don't need any help...but you do! When you reject help, your only hurting yourself. As much as it hurts, you must be open to correction with God and those you trust to speak into your life.
Here's my definition of a spiritual leader: one who leads others by being led by God's Spirit. Men, it is not only possible for you to do this but it is a priority that you do! I believe it starts with surrendering everything to God, especially the things (sins, mindsets, fleshly & selfish desires, etc.) that hold you back from who God wants you to be. God has given you everything you need to do exactly what He's calling you to do, right now! ...read that last line again.
Surrender to the Holy Spirit's leading in your life by listening to Him and acting on it. "The One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." (1John 4:4) He's the One who will do it...because He's greater than anyone or anything you will come up against in this world. So stop making excuses, stop telling yourself you can't, stop letting others determine who you will be as a man... and start surrendering to who God wants you to be.
1. Confess the desire of your heart to God and others you trust (accountability).
2. Turn from your old ways of thinking and acting that hold you back (repentance).
3. Trust in what God is doing in you (faith).
4. Act on the truth of who you are in Him (action).
